August 2009

I just returned from a whirlwind trip to the northeast visiting 15 colleges and meeting with admissions directors.  Whether I sat in offices at Barnard or Columbia, Sarah Lawrence, Vassar, NYU or Wagner, much of the conversation circulated around some basic principals. I’m thrilled with how transparent most officers were with regard to what they are looking for in their applicants.  Naturally, I want to share this, as I am most concerned with you, the students, and your success!

Here you go:

–       be focused

–       be hungry

–       creativity surfaces most everywhere

–       smart is good

–       interact with your community & seek internships

–       want teachable people

–       show an upward trend in high school

–       make teacher friends at school – they write recs

–       seek interdisciplinary opportunities & share about them

–       teach admission people something with your essay

–       write about small daily occurrences

–       they’re looking at writing skills

–       learn how to be brief

–       don’t recite their viewbook with anything you say

–       apply your personal interests

–       want engaged students

–       passion in the classroom

–       not too much emphasis on expressed interest

–       interview is a good thing but not much weight

–       do seek local interviews though

–       holistic is a buzz word in admissions

–       learn about the 12 college exchange program – lots out there

–       writing intensive curriculums

Happy Back to School Wherever You are!
